1/3rd-scale Folding Wing Prototype +VIDEO by EuTytoAlba 1/3rd-scale Folding Wing Prototype +VIDEO by EuTytoAlba
I keep thinking it looks like it's made of machete blades strung together like Christmas lights. :O_o: I even cut my fingers so much while building this that one might almost wonder if it was. :noes:

:star: VIDEO OF THIS WING IN MOTION & Original Digital Model :star:

Having seen how well this crude (cardboard) version works, I now know how to finish refining the design to collapse completely as well as extend completely, remain sturdy instead of torquing or bouncing, and also how to improve the weight distribution. After which, I will make it available to download as a papercraft template through Towerdweller.com.

Goal: 18ft wingspan MINIMUM

Materials in this prototype:
:bulletblack: thin cardboard from frozen pizza boxes
:bulletblack: brass thumbtacks
:bulletblack: finishing nails
:bulletblack: white glue
:bulletblack: hot glue
:bulletblack: silver spray paint
:bulletblack: 3/4'' wide gray ribbon

Beautiful wings! Has your template used made available for the public yet? I'm building a pair of wings for my Castiel (Supernatural) costume, and these are exactly what I have been looking for! Feel free to shoot me a note, and we could maybe exchange emails on there?! Once again, incredible job! Good luck reaching 18ft!!! :)

It's true.... I'm well aware that by the time I'm done making something, I'm so used to looking at it that I can only guess what kind of first impression it makes after its finished.

Also, now that my fingertips are healed from working with those thumbtacks, I've noticed that just looking at this wing, the real one or even just these photos of it, recalls a real sensation of physical pain. :noes:

I can see it probably caused a lot of pain by looking closely at it. But at first it doesn't look that harmful.

The next step is to have some sort of puppet mechanism that allows you to extend and collapse them while wearing them.

I once saw a pair of costume fairy wings at the Ren-Fair consisting of peacock feathers strung together on a hinge. There were strings that ran from the wings, over the shoulders to rest at the collar bone. The string mechanism was decorated to look like a necklace/bola tie. When the tie was tightened the wings would expand. When loosened they would drop back down.

My early concept sketches had something like that, with each joint (3 per wing + a vertical axis of rotation where it rests against the back) all individually controlled by wires that ran up over the shoulders. I'd love to get back to something like that after I refine the framework seen here a bit more. My dream is to create not only an enormous pair of costume wings, but wings that can actually express emotion, as an actor would use, and perhaps like angel wings would if people really had them.
