EDIT 7.14.13: SEE THE MINI PROTOTYPE I BUILT
I have looooong dreamed of making something like this.....
This is another work-in-progress for my new premium-papercrafts website, Towerdweller.com. YES, THIS 3D MODEL IS FOR PAPERCRAFT!! But the website, too, is still a work-in-progress, so there's nothing / no way to buy anything yet.
I made my first sketches of realistically-articulated costume wings like this several years ago, before I could 3D model and papercraft. I even attempted to build a set out of lightweight steel tubing, but they turned out less than functional, let alone graceful... Finally, now that I'm confident in my 3D abilities, I built a small cardboard mockup of the [revised] basic moving parts last night. When I saw that that worked, I took it outside, laid it on cement, and chalked in the basic silhouette. I took a picture of that, and then started 3D modeling a more intricate mockup with feathers on top of that image.
Tonight, I will build part of this model to make sure the feathers fold right. If they do, THEN I will start worrying about how to make the frame both strong and lightweight enough while still using a papercraft template. (Which will probably require some parts to be cut out of wood.) I WILL NOT SETTLE FOR A WINGSPAN ANY LESS THAN 18FT!!!
I sure hope the feathers behave, because I'm so happy with how these wings look that I just hafta squee continuously
while I work on them now.
And I suppose it's appropriate that I had this
stuck in my head the whole time last night.
After all, I named my site "Towerdweller"
as a reference to Daedalus, the father of Icarus, the one who really invented the wings that Icarus abused. (They were both trying to escape from a tower.) I first tried to call my site "Daedalia"
(about a year ago) but that was too much of a mouthful for it to stick...
